Utah House Passes Controversial Abortion Bill, Democrats Voice Strong Opposition
Salt Lake City, UT (Feb 18, 2023) – The Utah House of Representatives has passed a bill that would restrict access to abortion in the state. The bill, which passed with a vote of 56-17, would require doctors to provide information about the risks of abortion to patients and would also require parental consent for minors seeking abortions.
The bill has been met with strong opposition from Democrats, who argue that it is an attack on women’s rights and a violation of Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in the United States. They also argue that the bill does not take into account cases of sexual assault or medical emergencies that may require an abortion.
Proponents of the bill argue that it is necessary to protect the rights of the unborn and to ensure that women are fully informed about the risks of abortion. They also argue that parental consent is necessary to protect minors from making decisions that could have long-term consequences.
The bill now moves to the Utah Senate, where it is expected to pass. If it does, it will then go to the governor’s desk for final approval.
